Comrie Back in Ottawa

Completely unexpected. After a horrible season, everyone, including yours truly, thought the Senators were going to cut their losses, and possibly some cap space, and enter the John Tavares sweepstakes. Perhaps Sens GM Brian Murray is feeling some pressure to make the play-offs this year, or find another job. Trading away a 1st round pick for a proven player means the Senators still think they're in the play-off picture, which means they will be buyers at the trade deadline, not sellers, like many predicted.

They had two first rounders and they're trading the one that was going to be near the bottom (whatever position San Jose ends up) anyway. They'll still get their original first rounder based on where they end up. They've indicated that they are going to be sellers but they have filled key positions (a legitimate 2nd Center - looking at you Aidan - and a puck moving defenseman) which they needed. Comrie likes playing Ottawa and Campoli has paid off since he's arrived. I don't expect them to make the playoffs but both these players should be sticking around. If anything Ottawa has become celebrity central now with Hillary Duff still dating Comrie and now Carrie Underwood seeing Mike Fisher (somebody really likes him, lol).

When I first looked at this trade, I thought it was a strange and desperate move by Bryan Murray. But my opinion has actually changed.

Mike Comrie could actually be a solid 2nd line center but it all depends on whether he can be re-signed and what the cost of re-signing him is. Bryan Murray's expectation is that he will be re-signed.

Chris Campoli has potential. He is not a top 2 defenseman yet but he could be and he is an offensive d-man. If his production can move from 25 points to 35-40 points, he's a steal in this trade.

I can see why N.Y. would want the first rounder, but also why Ottawa would want Comrie and Campoli. A late first round pick is a risk, could be a top 6 forward, could be a bust.

Bryan Murray is still a lousy GM but this trade may actually make sense for both sides.

Ottawa still really needs a top offensive defenseman and a real no. 1 goalie.
